Sherlock Holmes Movie Review

January 9, 2010 Leave a comment

Finally, the long wait for this movie have come to an end. In our country, Philippines, It’s already available on Cinemas, since yesterday.

I wont write a long review for this movie.

Me and my 2 other friends watched it in Glorietta Cinemas. To my amusement, LOTS of folks were there to watch the movie. Yeah. I was really SURPRISED to think that Holmes is not that famous here. But I found a reason why there were lots of folks who watched. It’s because the lead actor is “Robert Downey Jr.”

Okay, so the movie was all fun and comedy or something like that but it’s not the real Holmes. The set-up, especially Holmes apartment, wasn’t that convincing at all. Irene Adler’s role was’nt a surprise to me. She is one of the notable female characters  in the Story and Holmes only love, but her connection with Professor Moriarty is a mystery to me. Speaking of Moriarty, he appeared quite early. Well, if they are planning a sequel i wont wonder why he’s there.

Although the movie showed Holmes intellectual capacity, the ways how he find clues, his violin skills I was still disappointed well, based from the trailers before, I knew this is coming.

As a Sherlockian, I want to see more of a real portrayal of Holmes based on ACD’s description of him and not the new-comedic Holmes.

Movie: Sherlock Holmes 2009

Early this year my classmate told me that there will be a movie of Sherlock Holmes.. I was surprised but didn’t paid much attention to the issue. Last June 4, when Jun and I watched movie (Night at the Museum 2) at Robinson’s mall, I finally saw the trailer of the “said” Holmes movie and as a big fan of Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories i feel alienated at Robert Downey’s Jr. portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.. The portrayal is very different to the original Holmes that Doyle constructed.. definitely not the one i’ve come to know and love, and based on the trailer this Sherlock Holmes lacks the qualities it should possess – eccentricity, impact, seriousness and intelligence but still since this would be my first Sherlock Holmes movie~ I will give it a try and I prepared for the outcome already but I think folks who doesn’t read Holmes will like this movie D: but that is not Holmes T_______T this makes me sad~ and Holmes never been a comedian D:

TRAILER… hmmm enjoy??? ;(

This is a sickening mockery. I need to reread the entire series of Sherlock Holmes to rinse myself from this filthiness.

Seriously, what is next, giving Poirot superpowers and turning him into a superhero? Thankfully, Poirot is lesser known outside of the mystery community compared to Holmes.

Holmes, my own heroin

Probably anyone who loves mystery/detective novels wont let this book to slip away from their collection.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes written by Sr Arthur Conan Doyle is really my heroin, once you take a little sip of it you’ll get highly addicted to it. If you are a lazy reader or is not interested in reading mystery novels then this book isn’t for you. Doyle used too much OLD english words on these novels that you can’t understand a single paragraph without consulting the dictionary. Quoting Mr Aoyama “The most difficult part of writing Conan was avoiding complicated words and phrases. It’s easy to use words that confuse the readers, but then people lose track of the story. Such complications can lead to trouble”.

I bought these volumes on the National Bookstore. Volume 1 costs 395php and Volume 2…. I forgot;; but maybe same price as the first volume. I wouldn’t mind to spend so much money on these books since it’s my hobby anyway and in the first place it’s not expensive =\

I haven’t finished reading the Volume 1 yet (I dont have time T_T) but im dying to read Volume 2; The Valley of Fear. It reminds me of Jack The Ripper, the notorious serial killer of all time in London, England during the 1888′s =\
